  1. Thank you for trying ListenUp Version 2.1!
  2.  
  3. ListenUp is ear training software for musicians.  ListenUp
  4. combines sound and colors in a graphical user interface
  5. to help musicians improve their sense of pitch.
  6.  
  7. By pairing a color with each note, notes can be recognized
  8. quickly and easily.  By practising with ListenUp, you can
  9. learn to recognize any note, even when the Color Pairs are
  10. turned off. ListenUp can dramatically improve your sense of
  11. musical pitch!
  12.  
  13. ListenUp generates notes randomly, so you won't be able to
  14. master the drills through rote learning.
  15.  
  16. ListenUp contains a Main Menu and two learning modules.
  17. The first module generates a single random note along with a
  18. colored circle.  After the note is played, you guess the
  19. note.  If you are unsure which note you heard, you can do one
  20. of four things:
  21.  
  22. Push "F1".  This will switch you to the Color Reference
  23. Chart, which shows you which color each semi-tone has been
  24. assigned to (This Color Chart is also available at the Main
  25. Menu).

  27. Push "F2".  This plays Middle "C", to provide a reference.
  28.  
  29. Push "F3".  This replays the note you just heard.
  30.  
  31. Or, you can just guess!  ListenUp keeps track of your score.
  32.  
  33. Once you get to know which colors are assigned to which
  34. notes, you will consistently get a 100% score.  In the Main
  35. Menu, you can switch the Color Pairs off and then do more
  36. trials.  After a while, you will be achieving perfect scores,
  37. because you will associate a color with each musical note.
  38. Then you will be ready for Interval Training!

  40. The second module involves interval training (an interval is
  41. the distance between two notes).  Here, you are presented
  42. with two notes in succession.  The first is always
  43. "C", the second is randomly generated.  Your task is to
  44. identify the interval presented (major 5th, minor 7th,
  45. octave, etc.).  Again, work with Color Pairs switched on
  46. initially.  Later, go on to identify intervals without the
  47. use of the assigned colors.  Again, ListenUp keeps track of
  48. your score.

  50. REQUIREMENTS
  51.  
  52. An I.B.M. or compatible computer, with EGA/VGA COLOR
  53. monitor, 256k RAM, DOS 2.0 or higher.  All I.B.M. and
  54. compatible computers come equipped with an internal speaker.

  56. INSTALLATION
  57.  
  58. Listenup will run from a floppy drive if you wish.  If you
  59. wish to install to a hard drive (say, drive C) first make a
  60. directory called LUP and then copy the diskette to your
  61. destination drive:

  64. COPY A:\*.* C:\LUP  (copies the diskette to drive C)

  68. To start the program, move to the directory you created and
  69. type:

  73. There are four files on this diskette:
  74. - README.1ST (The one you are reading now)
  75. - LISTENUP.DOC (A short manual you can print out)
  76. - REGISTER.DOC (A form you can print out and complete when
  77.                 you are ready to register)
  78. - LISTENUP.EXE (The program)
